A Ride In 2049

Interactive XR Experience
2019

The interactive short movie "A Ride In 2049" allows users to time-travel into the near future to explore a fictional Frankfurt, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The central theme revolves around the future of mobility and how the usage of AI-controlled, autonomous vehicles will profoundly shape the cities of tomorrow. The key question is how much space we are willing to allocate to autonomous vehicles.

The particular challenge of the project was to turn the technical limitations of the Oculus Go into an opportunity, in conjunction with the creation of a virtual production pipeline that focuses on the performance of Hollywood Star ︎Kisten Bush but at the same time provides interactive choices for the user.

In collaboration with ︎Hessischer Rundfunk and the Fraunhofer IAO, ︎Expanding Focus ventured into the realm of Cinematic VR to create a unique learning experience on the topic of future mobility. The following institutions supported the project: Wunderbar Together - the Year of Germany in the USA, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Sächsische Landesanstalt für privaten Rundfunk und Neue Medien, as well as the Thüringian State Chancellery.

Concurrently, the ︎Fraunhofer IAO conducted a study examining the emotions and attitudes evoked by the future visions presented in the VR experience for users. The accompanying hr/arte science documentary incorporates the study's findings, placing them within the context of international mobility research.

A ride in 2049 is also available as a ︎360° YouTube video.
