  Hi, I am Friedrich

My passion lies in the interdisciplinary.
I design games and interactive art, and I am a researcher in Human-Computer Interaction.
My artistic practice nurtures my research on the
human factors of game interaction, while my research
is equally fruitful for my human-centered design approach.

    In my current
    PhD project,
    I focus on older players.
I explore how immersive, enriching, and joyful forms
of play can be enabled by reducing barriers to digital
    interaction.
I firmly believe in the importance of constant exchange
between the artistic and scientific disciplines to form
a holistic design approach for one of the most
    fundamental cultural activities: play.

This includes opening both the design process and
the resulting products to as many people as possible.
I love spreading the word through teaching and outreach
to convey a sense of responsibility to future design talents.

Let us discuss future projects via
    email.

		<description>ALCAVOIDXR Game &#38;amp; Research Project2020

Alcavoid is a therapeutic XR application designed to assist clients with alcohol dependence in behavioural therapy developed at the DE:HIVE Centre for Games at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences in close cooperation with the University Medical Centre Hamburg Eppendorf. The goal of Alcavoid is to evaluate if the success of behaviour therapy is enhanced through immersive technology.
Participants are offered different beverages and are tasked to classify the bottles by their content. A pilot study was conducted based on data collected through the application. Alcavoid and its corresponding research are part of the Interreg
project Baltic Game Industry.

The Atrium — An Ambisonic Music Installation &#38;amp; InterArts — Allegory
        Art Installation &#38;amp; Performance
        2022

The art installations “Atrium” and “InterArts” are part of the 2022 Future Stages performance. Based on the principle of a VR cave, literally and figuratively, visitors experience an immersive journey through a cavernous world interspersed with ancient architecture, travelling from one performance to the next.

The projections of the virtual environment act as a backdrop for the performances and a spatial art installation in itself, using game technologies to aggregate performative arts.

    PARADIGM SHIFT

        By Maria Bürger
        Art Installation
        2020

Artificial intelligence is one of the most controversial topics of our time: approval encounters rejection, euphoria encounters fear. How do these different perspectives compare?
The artistic VR experience “PARADIGM SHIFT” explores a changing relationship between the participant and a virtual assistant similar to Siri or Alexa. The virtual assistant accompanies the viewer’s journey through the scenario via a real-time dialogue interface. Over time, the assistant’s attitude towards the viewer changes. The degree of control which the assistant transfers to the viewer varies accordingly: free choice turns to manipulation; authority to powerlessness.

    A MATTER OF TIME

Time is a fundamental yet intangible aspect of human existence. “A Matter of Time” is a serious game that explores how linear and circular time perception influence decision-making. The game combines a physical board game with augmented reality elements, creating a multimodal game medium.

The findings analyze gameplay and decision-making patterns, providing valuable insights into the profound impact of time perception on thought processes and actions. Consequently, they offer a deeper understanding of this essential facet of human experience.

    THE PUPPET FACTORY

        Vertical Slice VR Game
        2017

Immersive storytelling in the tradition of classic horror literature through interaction, rather than words, is the goal of “The Puppet Factory”. In this XR experience in the fashion of an escape game, players make their way through the abandoned building, solving puzzles and exploring the grotesque environment of a long-forgotten place.

Overcoming the limitations of the virtual space by an elevator, players navigate through a variety of increasingly surreal rooms. The tension rises through an interplay of empowerment and denial. Leaving as much of the dread as possible to the player’s imagination was the key philosophy in the creation of this vertical slice.
